Edge of World Retreats is Launching Their New Writers' Workshop Series

San Diego , CA — July 30, 2010 — Edge of World Retreats is excited to introduce a new series of trips entitled Edge of World Writers' Retreats. On a writers' retreat trip, participants travel with a professional writer who leads the group in a themed workshop. These workshops serve to improve and foster both the craft and the creative energy of all retreat participants. The first workshop will take place in Atlanta, GA from January 10-17, 2011. Led by Jericho Brown ( jerichobrown.com), the workshop is entitled “Poets with History,” and it will utilize Atlanta 's famous MLK Jr. Day events as a backdrop to workshop activities.

While most Edge of World Writers' Retreats are generative (designed to inspire new work) and focus on both poetry and prose, this workshop is unique in that it will center around poetry submitted by workshop participants, aiding them in taking their work to the next level.

The second workshop in the series will head to Tanzania with Tracy K. Smith in July 2011. Entitled “From the Outside In: Peeling Back the Layers of ‘Other' in Poetry and Prose,” this workshop will provide participants with exercises and literary models designed to add greater depth, texture and empathy to their writing about the lives of others.  Outside of the classroom, structured and unstructured encounters with the Maasai people and culture will give participants the opportunity to use documentary and reporting techniques to produce a sequence of poems, an essay or piece of short fiction based on the region and its people.

Following this, we'll go to China for a workshop led by Terrance Hayes in January 2012. Stay tuned as we expand our ever-growing list of destinations.

In order to spread the word about these new workshop trips, this fall Nikolai Walker, an Edge of World Retreats tour operator, is going on a road trip to colleges across the country. In only 44 days, he's going to hit over 30 states and nearly 100 colleges. Not only that, but he'll be relying on the goodwill of friends—both old and new—to make it happen, hopefully not staying in a single hotel! If you want to meet up with him along the way, or follow his progress, you can do so at facebook.com/NicksRoadTrip. He'll also be meeting with and interviewing writers and students of graduate writing programs at as many colleges as he can. So if you're planning on applying to a creative writing program in the near or distant future, be sure to follow his trip, as he'll be posting firsthand impressions!
